EV Ownership - so what's it really like?

We all know the benefits of going electric. They're good for the environment, cheap to run and extremely quiet. But we also often think of them as slow, difficult and a little bit Hippie...
A lot has changed in recent years. So what's EV Ownership really like in this day and age?
Our founder Megan May was lucky enough to take the all new Hyundai Kona Electric for a spin over the Summer Holidays. We chatted to her about her experience.

So how "difficult" are EVs really when it comes to charging and mileage?

One of the biggest misconceptions about going electric is the compromise around having the freedom to drive a long distance. The new Hyundai Kona Electric really blows that out of the water. With a range of over 400 km, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever get yourself in a position where you are short on kms. I generally only need to charge it twice a week from when I get home at 6pm to when I leave for the office the next morning at 8am, using a regular household power point. At a few dollars a charge, we don’t even notice the impact on our power bill! It truly is so much more economical and hassle-free than a petrol car. It sounds a little too good to be true, but it really is!

What are some of your favourite features?

The Hyundai Kona Electric makes driving a whole lot of fun with high performance handling, speed and over 400 km per charge - my daughter Pepper calls it her Rocket Car.

It has so many cool and functional features; like seat heating, cooling and comfort controls, lane assist and cruise control. My favourite feature is the carplay mode which makes doing business on the run both safe and easy, with hands-free calls and texts through voice command.

The Kona Electric proves that you don’t have to give up any luxuries or functionality when making a more conscious and sustainable decision to buy Electric. For us, this really is the best car we have ever had the pleasure of driving, and the fact that it's more environmentally friendly is a bonus!

What's it like on a long distance road trip?

Unlike before, the all new Hyundai Kona Electric proves you no longer have to compromise on range when going electric, with over 400 km per charge. We recently took a quick trip down to the Coromandel from Auckland for a couple nights over Christmas and with only one quick charge at the batch overnight (literally plugging it into a house charger) we were able to make it down to the Coromandel,  zoom around Coromandel with several day trips to different beaches and make it back to Auckland with plenty of kms still left on the clock.

As a busy working Mum who's often on the run, what's it like?

While Pepper’s favourite feature of the new Hyundai Kona Electric is the speed, as a busy working mum, having a compact SUV makes getting around town both comfortable and easy. It has custom window shades, which keep the sun out of Pepper’s eyes, and the isofix bars make getting car seats in and out a breeze. There is plenty of room for her plethora of toys she wants to bring along for the ride. It’s a fantastic run around town car for the family, making trips to pre-school and running errands hassle free.
